1st–4th April Tree Work Highlights

As spring breathes new life into gardens across London, we were hard at work during the first week of April, helping a few special trees find their balance—both in form and function.

Hampstead: Shaping Magnolias with Care

We began the month in the leafy charm of Hampstead, where two Magnolia grandiflora trees had outgrown their elegant surroundings. While majestic and evergreen, these magnolias had begun to cast excessive shade and dominate the garden space. Our brief was to reduce and reshape them—preserving their natural beauty while making them more proportional to the space.

Careful reduction work was carried out to bring light back into the garden without compromising the health of the trees. All arisings were professionally bagged and carried out with the utmost care through an immaculately kept home—no muddy boots or broken vases here. Respect for our clients’ property is as important to us as respect for the trees themselves.

Crouch End: Gentle Restoration of a Weeping Birch

Next, we made our way to Crouch End, where a Weeping Birch bore the scars of past mistreatment. Previously subjected to overly aggressive lopping, the tree had developed cavities—hollows that weaken its structural integrity and make it vulnerable to further damage.

Our approach here is part of an ongoing plan. Rather than cutting back drastically, we’re managing the tree’s health through selective thinning and shaping. By removing some of the newer, heavier growth and reducing bulkier branches, we’re able to reduce wind resistance and overall weight—helping to bring back the tree’s original elegant form while ensuring its stability.

Given that the birch overhangs a public road, safety was paramount. We cordoned off the area with clear “Tree Cutting” signage, barriers, and hazard tape, ensuring the well-being of both pedestrians and passing vehicles throughout the work. Responsible tree care isn’t just about aesthetics or health—it’s also about keeping people safe.

Final Thoughts

Early April was a perfect reminder of how varied tree work can be—from fine pruning in pristine gardens to structural preservation in urban environments. No matter the setting, our focus remains the same: honouring the tree, protecting the property, and prioritising safety.
