At Gibbs & Haynes, we’re no strangers to the challenges that come with maintaining large, mature trees – and this week was a perfect example. Between 14th and 18th April, we returned to a site in North London to deal with a collapsed Willow Tree that had previously been reduced as a precautionary measure.

Willow Trees are graceful and fast-growing, but their sprawling structure and heavy limbs make them vulnerable to collapse, especially after storms or in weakened soil. Fortunately, thanks to the strategic crown reduction we carried out the previous Friday, the trunk had already lifted by around half a metre. This made our return visit much safer and more manageable.

The dismantling process was methodical. We worked section by section, ensuring safety and control throughout. As is often the case with older trees, surprises can emerge. This time, it came in the form of a single rogue nail, long since embedded in the heart of the trunk. It was invisible from the outside and, unfortunately, blunted one of our saws. Not ideal – but all part of the job!

Despite this hiccup, we completed the removal efficiently, leaving the site tidy and the tree’s former space clear. Our clients were extremely pleased with the outcome, particularly the way we managed both the safety concerns and the final clean-up.

At Gibbs & Haynes, we believe in combining professional care with attention to detail – whether we’re maintaining, reducing, or removing trees. This Willow Tree project showcased the importance of regular maintenance and timely intervention – both of which prevented a more serious incident on the property.
